Le World wide web (www), qui a facilité l’accès à l’internet grâce à son interface graphique, n’en est qu’à ses débuts, a indiqué mercredi, le scientifique britannique Tim Berners-Lee, à l’occasion du 15e anniversaire du lancement de sa création.

“Le web a été un outil extraordinaire pour que les gens fassent de bonnes choses même si on peut y trouver de mauvaises choses”, a relevé Sir Berners-Lee dans un entretien à la BBC, soulignant qu’un jour le réseau virtuel mettra “toutes les données du monde” à portée de chaque utilisateur.

Mais “nous avons seulement commencé à explorer les possibilités” du web, a-t-il dit, estimant que sa création “n’en est qu’à ses balbutiements”.
Selon lui, le réseau mondial ou “toile” (web en anglais) pourrait s’orienter dans de nombreuses directions mais devrait avant tout être une force utilisée pour le bien.
“Ce qui est excitant, c’est que les gens bâtissent de nouveaux systèmes sociaux, de nouveaux systèmes de contrôle, de nouveaux systèmes de gouvernance”, a déclaré M. Berners-Lee.
“Mon espoir est que ces (systèmes) produiront… de nouvelles façons de travailler ensemble efficacement et équitablement qui pourront être utilisées dans le monde entier pour que l’on se gère en tant que planète”, a-t-il ajouté.
En août 1991, l’Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire (CERN) a lancé le projet World wide web dans un laboratoire de physique de Genève. Le scientifique britannique a inventé le concept de lien hypertexte et l’architecture d’un réseau mondial en “toile d’araignée” (web) qui a facilité l’accès à l’internet, jusque-là réservé à une petite communauté scientifique.
Le 30 avril 1993, le CERN annonçait que le réseau serait utilisable par tous après avoir consenti à diffuser le code source gratuitement.
La toile, dont l’abréviation en anglais “www” est une composante des adresses des sites en ligne, est désormais un lieu omniprésent d’échange d’informations sur l’internet. Selon la BBC, le web compte environ 165 millions de sites.

SAN FRANCISCO — Microsoft is preparing to take its most ambitious step yet in transforming its personal computer business into one tied more closely to software running in remote data centers.

The software giant announced on Tuesday a data storage and Web software system, called Live Mesh, that is intended to blur the distinction between software running on the Windows operating system and an elaborate array of services that will be delivered to a growing collection of electronic gadgets. Live Mesh is Microsoft’s late entry into a rapidly growing market described as cloud computing. The term refers to the movement of software applications and services from PCs to centralized data centers, where they are made available via the Internet. Companies like Amazon.com, Google, Salesforce and dozens of others are building computing centers that will effectively outsource data processing and make it a commodity that companies purchase as they would electricity.

Yahoo said Tuesday that it would join an alliance organized by Google, its principal rival, that will try to make it easier for programmers to write software that can run on the pages of many social networks and other Web sites.

Google announced on Tuesday that it would give up control of the alliance and turn it over to a nonprofit foundation. Google, Yahoo and MySpace, another member of the group, will be among founding members of the group, the OpenSocial Foundation.

The addition of Yahoo broadens the potential reach of the foundation. The group is working on standards that will let developers create programs that can run on any social network or Web site that embraces them. Such programs might, for example, allow users to let friends know the music or movies they enjoy.

The creation of the OpenSocial alliance last fall was widely seen as a response by Google and others to the growing power of Facebook, which has persuaded thousands of outside developers to build applications for its site. Those applications have helped bolster Facebook’s popularity.

The creators of many of the most popular Facebook applications have since said they plan to adapt their programs to be compatible with OpenSocial.

Although Google is not a major force in social networking, its rivalry with Facebook appears to be intensifying. Facebook, for instance, has signed an advertising partnership with Microsoft and has recruited several prominent programmers and executives from Google, including Sheryl Sandberg, who became Facebook’s chief operating officer.

A Facebook spokeswoman, Brandee Barker, said it would not be part of OpenSocial. “Facebook is not joining this foundation, but the company remains focused on advancing Facebook Platform to benefit the developer community and help users communicate and share information more efficiently,” Ms. Barker said.

Yahoo considered joining the alliance for months, according to a person with direct knowledge of its plans. But Yahoo executives worried that Google might exert too much control over the evolution of the alliance and over any intellectual property it created, that person said.

In a conference call with reporters, Google and Yahoo executives dismissed the idea that the decision to put OpenSocial in the hands of a foundation was a response to Yahoo’s concerns.

Joe Kraus, director of product management at Google, said the foundation represented “more an evolution of where OpenSocial is heading” than a response to concerns raised by any one member. And Wade Chambers, vice president for platforms at Yahoo, praised Google’s stewardship of the standard so far.

The foundation, to be created within 90 days, will “ensure the neutrality and longevity of OpenSocial as an open, community-governed specification for building social applications across the Web,” the companies said.

Yahoo gave no details on when or how it would adopt the OpenSocial standards. So far, only MySpace and Orkut, Google’s social network, have introduced OpenSocial, Mr. Kraus said.

Participatory Urban Design & the Future of Alternative Communities

Dharavi is known as Asia’s largest slum. This workshop is an experiment in participatory design. It takes place in one specific part of Dharavi called Koliwada which is a fisher folk community who settled there about 400 years ago. Once on the outskirts of the city Dharavi is now in the center of greater Mumbai. The whole area is going to be redeveloped and the Kolis are interested in getting ideas about how the new development could address their specific needs and history.

The Urban Typhoon workshop is a global experiment in participatory design. It is directly connected to the various communities of Dharavi and its grassroots community groups.

The objective is to produce creative alternatives for the future of a neighborhood threatened by a redevelopment plan of the government as well as a multimedia testimony to the unique spirit of Koliwada. The workshop itself is a joyous and participatory takeover of the neighbourhood. It combines the city’s historic spirit of activism with the celebratory, independent and culturally dynamic traditions that the Kolis of Mumbai have always demonstrated. The plan builds on these impulses in the best traditions of a festive exchange with visitors, guests, strangers and locals of all shades and hues.

The workshop is multicultural, multidisciplinary and multimedia. We invite students, urban planners, architects, designers, artists, sociologists, media artists, political activists, utopists, and other nomads to imagine the future of Koliwada.

Résumé: Les outils de “web content management” permettent de résoudre la plupart des problèmes de production liés aux sites web tout en jetant un pont entre les différents supports de diffusion de l’information. Mais l’engouement dont bénéficient ces logiciels ne doit pas faire oublier que leur déploiement reste difficile et que leur marché est très mouvant. Le coup d’envoi à été donné le 24 septembre par la ministre de l’Economie, Christine Lagarde, le secrétaire d’Etat aux Entreprises et au Commerce extérieur Hervé Novelli, et la ministre de la Culture Christine Albanel. Les trois ministres ont signé un arrêté qui permet au CSA de lancer l’appel a candidatures pour sélectionner les chaînes qui diffuseront sur le mobile, dès la fin octobre. Une quinzaine de chaînes devraient être retenues.

La France est bien décidée à rattraper son retard sur les pays qui l’ont devancée en matière de télévision sur mobile. Un déploiement de grande envergure de ce service est envisagé vers 2010. Selon Christine Lagarde, la télé de poche permettra de créer une dizaine de milliers d’emplois.

a justice européenne a confirmé, lundi 17 septembre, pour l’essentiel, la condamnation pour abus de position dominante du groupe américain Microsoft, prononcée en mars 2004 par la Commission européenne, ainsi que l’amende record de 497 millions d’euros dont il avait écopé.

La justice européenne a donné raison, pratiquement sur toute la ligne, à la Commission européenne dans sa décision de sanctionner Microsoft.
Les juges du tribunal de première instance (TPI) de l’Union européenne, qui ont eu plus de trois ans pour rendre leur verdict sur cette affaire, ont confirmé l’amende de 497,2 millions d’euros, assortie de “remèdes” très contraignants.

Microsoft a donc bien violé les règles antitrust en limitant l’interopérabilité entre les PC “Windows”, son système d’exploitation présent sur plus de 95 % des ordinateurs personnels, afin de maintenir son quasi-monopole. Outre l’amende, la firme américaine avait été condamnée à communiquer à ses concurrents les informations nécessaires pour assurer la compatibilité de leurs machines avec les PC sous Windows, moyennant une rémunération “raisonnable”.

L’autre “remède” imposé à Microsoft concernait l’interdiction de la “vente liée” de Windows et de Windows Media Player, son lecteur de fichiers audio et vidéo, grâce, par exemple, à des rabais consentis aux équipementiers. Le TPI rejette la création d’un poste de mandataire chargé de superviser la mise en oeuvre de la décision.

La Commission s’est félicitée de la décision mais Microsoft, qui défend son droit à innover dans ce secteur, avait annoncé son intention de faire appel.
